    Mr. Kanawat Chantaralawan

Mr. Kanawat Chantaralawan, a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University.    He is interested in performing a community development project on “Encephalitis Surveillance System : an urgent task in Thailand”. Recently, the incidence of emerging infectious diseases has increased rapidly due to globalization across the globe: improvement in transportation, changing in land utilization, or migration of population. Viral encephalitis is one of its kinds, which can be studied as a role model to build a surveillance system and information networks. Moreover, it is a disease that causes a great burden to patients and severe consequences even after recovery. Therefore, aim of this project is to help create a comprehensive system for viral encephalitis management and build networks across the country in order to decrease the incidence and prevalence of this disease in Thailand.

                    Mr. Jirayu Chantanakomes
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

Mr. Jirayu Chantanakomes, a 6th year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, has proposed paper about “HIV/AIDS and immerging diseases within the migrated population in Thailand”. This paper was inspired by two major parts. Firstly, his interest in HIV/AIDS which though Thailand’s health services has evolved so much in the last decade, the control of this disease is still a major problem within the public health. This may be due to the fact that there are many sources of spreading and due to other significant factors. Many organizations have tried to prevent the spread of HIV within many populations such as youths, homosexuals, for instance. However, another population that has not yet been fully supported and is a major source of immerging diseases is migrated population and migrant workers. Thus leads to the second inspiration for this project that is his interest in human rights. Though there are millions of migrants in Thailand, there is still lack of interest in this population by organizations within Thailand itself. Therefore this project proposed to the scholarship is mainly to study the control of diseases within migrated population and how to help this group of people. Through helping the migrated population, we will be able to reduce the rate of infection and emerging diseases within the Thai people as well.

Mr. Chantanakomes has received many honors and awards as follows:

                    Mr. Passisd     Laoveeravat
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University

Mr. Passisd Laoveeravat  is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University.    He is interested in performing a research on “Critical care system development for critical patients in general wards of hospitals” due to the fact that there are many patients with cardiopulmonary arrest in the general ward which are the usual situations in hospitals. Without the development of critical care system, cardiopulmonary arrest trends to be increasing nowadays. As a result, the burden on public health system remains the problem because most post-arrest patients will end up with brain anoxia and respirator needs. There are rooms of improvement for critical care system in Thailand especially the warning system and experienced team. Therefore, The aim of this project is to initiate the prevention system as the early detection to decrease the cardiopulmonary arrest and make it applicable to Thai hospital context.
